President's Message

Dee Orick

Dear Members,

As we move toward the end of this unprecedented school year, I want to thank you for your willingness to remain flexible, your ingenuity in approaching new ways to serve your students, and your unwavering commitment to your communities.  We have all been tested in ways none of us could have anticipated.  You have demonstrated to the world what we have always personally known; that School Nutrition Professionals are caring, strong, innovative and essential to the health and well-being of the youth of our nation.

We as an Association must now, more than ever, prioritize the health and safety of our members and industry partners.  With this in mind the Executive Board made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Spring Seminar, the ISNA Leadership Academies and all ISNA/IDOE School Nutrition Certificate courses through June 2020.  Although we are disappointed that these events won’t be happening, it has given us the opportunity to seek out ways that we can connect with our members remotely via social media.   Our goal has always been to offer diverse opportunities for our members to obtain quality education in the field of school nutrition and as soon as it is safe to do so, we will continue on with that mission!  “Virtual” has been a bit of a challenge for me as I am sure that it has been for others.  It seems I am always muted when I want someone to hear me and unmuted when I don’t!

It is our hope that the ISNA Annual Conference in November 2020 will be held as usual.  We are excited to be going back to Fort Wayne.  Leanne Koeneman, your President Elect and thus conference chair, is a resident of the area with an insider’s knowledge of Fort Wayne and has some great things planned for us.  We will continue to keep you informed about any changes to the regularly scheduled annual conference if/when they become available.

Please keep in touch with us and our members through email and social media…see below for our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook information.  There has been a recent change to our Public Relations Committee.  Callie Neumann, the previous Public Relations Chair, was given the opportunity to move back to her home state of Minnesota, thus the need to resign from the ISNA Executive Board.  Although we will all miss her dearly, we are glad that she is able to be closer to her family.  Lucky for us, the board voted to accept my appointment of Heather Brenegan to continue as the PR Chair.  Heather has been with the MSD of Wayne Township for almost 3 years as the Assistant Child Nutrition Director and prior to that worked for Sysco Foodservice.  Heather will be taking over our social media sites so please take advantage of them to connect with other school nutrition professionals here in Indiana.

In closing, I wish you and your families’ good health and safety over the coming months.
